Prof. S. Čaplinskas' Lecture on the Prevention of Psychoactive Substance Use
On May 13th, a lecture by Professor Saulius Čaplinskas on the prevention of psychoactive substance use took place in the Tauragė District Municipality.
The lecture was a joint effort involving three municipalities (Tauragė, Šilalė, and Pagėgiai), attended by the deputy mayor of the Tauragė District Municipality, members of the community health council, municipal representatives, public health bureau specialists, police, school representatives, and other interested parties, as well as representatives from the Šilalė and Pagėgiai municipalities.
The use of psychoactive substances by children and adolescents remains a significant challenge. Therefore, in order to shape the prevention of these substances in the Tauragė District Municipality, a plan for the prevention of psychoactive substance use is being developed.
Professor Saulius Čaplinskas presented information about psychoactive substances, their dynamics, prevalence, and health risks. The professor shared the prevention model "Planet Youth" from Iceland. Iceland has developed an evidence-based methodology for preventing adolescent drug use, aimed at deterring adolescents from using stimulants. The intervention focused on reducing known risk factors while simultaneously strengthening the influence of parents, schools, and the community.
Over the decade during which this model was applied, the use of narcotic substances among Icelandic adolescents noticeably decreased. Data shows that by leveraging various societal levels, it is possible to define and implement well-organized actions to promote the emotional well-being of adolescents.
